How to get started.

5 Top tips on How to Start a Photography Business

If you’ve completed your education and are ready to establish your own photography business, here are five essential steps to help you get started:

1. Invest in the Right Equipment

Choose a camera that fits within your budget; it doesn’t need to be the most expensive model with all the features. Spend time learning how to use your camera by experimenting with its settings and mastering fundamental concepts like the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO).

2. Essential Gear for Newborn Photography

If you’re focusing on newborn photography, you only need a few key items to begin: fabric for backdrops and wraps, a beanbag or posing table (even a dog bed can work) to position the baby, posing pillows, lighting (either softboxes or natural light), and props like buckets or drawers. Start with these basics and practice as much as possible. For other types of photography, consider investing in a backdrop stand, a quality backdrop, and seating options like stools or boxes. Always prioritize quality over quantity; purchasing cheap equipment often leads to replacement costs.

3. Create a Business Plan

Define your target audience and the type of photography you want to specialise in. What excites you most about photography? Determining your passion is key. Additionally, calculate your *cost of doing business (CODB)*—this is critical for understanding how to price your services to not only cover your expenses but also make a profit.

4. Continuous Learning and Professional Development

One of the best investments you can make is in yourself. Keep your skills sharp and up to date—learning should be a constant process. Attend workshops, take part in 1-on-1 training with industry professionals, and seek out opportunities for growth. The knowledge and insights gained from experienced photographers will prove invaluable in your journey.

5. Take Action and Enjoy the Process

Once you’ve laid the foundation, get started—and most importantly, enjoy it!
